08/10/2013

Continental Sports is delighted to have completed the installation of a full suite of gymnastics apparatus at the fabulous new “Tumbles at Portobello” for Edinburgh Leisure.

Tumbles at Portobello is a world-class gymnastics facility giving thousands of children, from beginners to elite athletes and a range of gymnastics clubs, the opportunity to access state-of-the-art gymnastics equipment and coaching up to international standard.

This new 1589 sq m facility will benefit gymnasts of all levels and represents the only venue in Scotland to provide Continental’s newly developed ModuBlox range specifically designed for Freestyle Gymnastics.   Designed and built by Continental Sports, the UK’s leading manufacturer and supplier of sports and physical education equipment, the expansive gymnastics arena includes a sprung floor for the dance and acrobatic disciplines as well as the freestyle equipment. There are also parallel bars, trampolines, beams, vault, tumble areas, fast track and vast foam pitted areas, which are key to safe skills development for aspiring gymnasts.

As well as the state-of-the-art gymnastics facility, Tumbles features a vast soft play area in a 6m high play frame.  Taking inspiration from the gymnastics facilities, Tumbles offers impressive sports-themed distinct zones which cater for babies, toddlers and juniors with a variety of fun and exciting facilities for children up to 9 years old.  This play gym is within the gymnastics hall encouraging young children to watch and take an interest in gymnastics and it will act as a feeder to provide children for gymnastics classes.

Minister for Commonwealth Games and Sport, Shona Robison said:

“Gymnastics continues to be a hugely popular sport in Scotlandand I am delighted to see new ventures like Tumbles provide a springboard for people of all ages and abilities to get more active. I’m sure many are looking forwards to seeing some of the world’s best gymnasts perform at the Commonwealth Games next year and again in 2015 when Scotland welcomes the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships. It is more important than ever to encourage participation in sport and physical activity, with fantastic new facilities such as those at Tumbles in Portobello.”

John Comiskey, Chief Executive, Edinburgh Leisure commented:

“We are delighted to announce the completion of Tumbles at Portobello. This marks a major milestone in the development of sports facilities in the Edinburgh and Lothian region and is testament to Edinburgh Leisure’s ongoing commitment to improving leisure and sports facilities for people of all ages and abilities. Tumbles has been developed by Edinburgh Leisure in direct response to unmet demand for family activities in this area and specifically in response to the surge in popularity of gymnastics across Edinburgh.

“There are over 200 children currently on waiting lists for Edinburgh Leisure gymnastics programmes,  demonstrating just how popular gymnastics is becoming. By creating the City's only purpose-built gymnastics and freestyle facility, we are confident that many more children will be inspired to become more active and take advantage of the facilities that Tumbles at Portobello has to offer.”

Nick Booth, Managing Director, Continental Sports commented:

“We are delighted to have worked with Edinburgh Leisure to deliver this innovative and comprehensive gymnastics training facility in record time, on budget and to programme.  This is the first new performance gymnastics facility in the UKto provide a comprehensive range of equipment for artistic gymnastics, trampolining, TeamGym and Freestyle Gymnastics.  With the ground-breaking idea of incorporating a huge play-gym within the gymnastics training hall, this family-friendly gym will have a natural pool of young gymnasts queuing up to join the gymnastics classes.”
